5 September, 2005 at 8:11 pm #136340on hearing this on the news today…..
The body of a newborn baby boy found in a park in the east end of Glasgow was discovered in a duck pond, police said.
The child’s body was found by three 11-year-old girls in Alexandra Park, Dennistoun, about 1910 BST on Sunday.A post-mortem examination revealed the child was born five to seven days ago, though it was unclear how long the baby had been in the pond.
Strathclyde Police appealed to the mother of the child, who may need medical support, to come forward.
They said tests were still required, following a post mortem examination, to establish whether the baby boy was stillborn or died after birth.
Alexandra Park is a popular recreation area, about two miles from the city centre.
It has been closed off for the duration of the forensic examination, with entrances cordoned off and uniformed officers standing guard.
*It may be that the baby was stillborn and she just panicked or something – you just don’t know
Helen McGreskin,
Dennistoun resident *Door-to-door enquiries are also being carried out in the flats which overlook the park, and CCTV footage is being examined.
Superintendent Jim McKechnie of London Road Police Office, said: “I am urgently appealing to the mother of this child to come forward and receive the medical treatment she will need following the birth.
“Our priority is the physical and mental wellbeing of the baby’s mother and I stress that she will be treated with sensitivity.
“I would also appeal to anyone who was in the park over the weekend, especially in the area near the duck pond and saw any suspicious activity to come forward.”
Police have been carrying out forensic tests
Shocked residents have been laying flowers and toys with messages of sympathy at the gates.
A blue teddy bear carried the message: “Goodnight. God bless.”
Helen McGreskin, 29, who laid flowers on a bench outside the park, said: “It’s so sad. God knows what the mother has gone through.
“I just wanted to come down and show that there are people out there who care.
“It may be that the baby was stillborn and she just panicked or something – you just don’t know.”
Fred Purcell said: “Everyone is upset about it, especially the women.”
Mother ‘distressed’
The discovery saddened Nicola McManus, 22, who has recently had a baby.
She said: “I just found out this morning. It’s such a shame. The person that has done this is obviously not well.”
Christine Kirkir, who walks her granddaughter through the park most days, said: “It is so sad. The mother has obviously been very distressed.”
