Okay..long long ago and far away..my best friend and I fell in love with Peter Gabriel..and long before anyone else on the entire planet had heard of them..we became ardent fans of Genesis.
We blackened our eyes and came perilously close to shaving a strip out of our hair just like Peter (we were young, silly and infatuated) Our plan was to move to Bath where he was then residing..but reality kicked in as well as a love for Caravan..Gong..Steely Dan..Magma..Amon Duul..Camel and thousands of others. But we never quite lost our affection for Peter.
We were first to the Usher Hall to see Genesis’ concert tour of A Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and were devastated when Peter left, to be replaced on vocals by drummer Phil Collins (weasely wee shyte but let’s not go there).
So..in memory of that first love..here’s a thread devoted to the finest prog rock band ever..starting with clips of our boy..moving on inevitably to the post-peter years as there are more of them available.
*Wipes snot on back of lace-glove*The Musical Box
While Henry Hamilton-Smythe minor 8 was playing croquet with Cynthia Jane De Blaise-William (9), sweet-smiling Cynthia raised her mallet high and gracefully removed Henry’s head. Two weeks later, in Henry’s nursery, she discovered his treasured musical box. Eagerly she opened it and as “Old King Cole” began to play, a small spirit- figure appeared. Henry had returned – but not for long, for as he stood in the room his body began ageing rapidly, leaving a child’s mind inside. A lifetime’s desires surged through him. Unfortunately the attempt to persuade Cynthia Jane to fulfill his romantic desire led his nurse to the nursery to investigate the noise. Instinctively Nanny hurled the musical box at the bearded child, destroying both.Play me Old King Cole
That I may join with you,
All your hearts now seem so far from me
It hardly seems to matter now.And the nurse will tell you lies
Of a kingdom beyond the skies.
But I am lost within this half-world,
It hardly seems to matter now.Play me my song.
Here it comes again.
Play me my song.
Here it comes again.Just a little bit,
Just a little bit more time,
Time left to live out my life.Play me my song.
Here it comes again.
Play me my song.
Here it comes again.Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he.
So he called for his pipe,
And he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three. But the clock, tick-tock,
On the mantlepiece –
And I want, and I feel, and I know, and I touch,
the wallShe’s a lady, she’s got time,
Brush back your hair, and let me get to know your face.
She’s a lady, she is mine.
Brush back your hair, and let me get to know your flesh.I’ve been waiting here for so long
And all this time has passed me by
It doesn’t seem to matter now
You stand there with your fixed expression
Casting doubt on all I have to say.
Why don’t you touch me, touch me,
Why don’t you touch me, touch me,
Touch me now, now, now, now, now…The Return of the Giant Hogweed
Turn and run!
Nothing can stop them,
Around every river and canal their power is growing.
Stamp them out!
We must destroy them,
They infiltrate each city with their thick dark warning odour. They are invincible,
They seem immune to all our herbicidal battering.Long ago in the russian hills,
A victorian explorer found the regal hogweed by a marsh,
He captured it and brought it home.
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge.
Royal beast did not forget.
He came home to london,
And made a present of the hogweed to the royal gardens at kew.Waste no time!
They are approaching.
Hurry now, we must protect ourselves and find some shelter
Strike by night!
They are defenceless.
They all need the sun to photosensitize their venom.Still theyre invincible,
Still theyre immune to all our herbicidal battering.Fashionable country gentlemen had some cultivated wild gardens,
In which they innocently planted the giant hogweed throughout the land.
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge.
Royal beast did not forget.
Soon they escaped, spreading their seed,
Preparing for an onslaught, threatening the human race. The dance of the giant hogweed
Mighty hogweed is avenged.
Human bodies soon will know our anger.
Kill them with your hogweed hairs

10 October, 2008 at 12:18 pm #380516Is it really true what they’re saying
Are you really sure there’s nobody come for me
When I’m walking home there is no-one
Once there was a house, full of laughter – so warm
Trying to pretend there is someone
Someone who will care when I need itI will now receive my comfort, conjured by the magic power of wine
Just a drink, I’ll get that drink, and I’m feeling good
Just a drink, I’ll get that drink, and I’m feeling fine
Just a drink to take my sorrow
Just a drink and you can blast tomorrow
Just a drink to make me feel like a man again
Now I’m downWhen I walk outside, there is nowhere
Children follow me, with their laughter – so cold…
Casting just a glance at the churchyard
Casting just a glance, at my painted female friend. Now I’m on my way, I am falling
Got to find some ‘elp, ooh I will need that nowSo I will receive my comfort, conjured by the magic power of wine
Just a drink, I’ll get that drink, and I’m feeling good
Just a drink, I’ll get that drink, and I’m feeling fine
Just a drink to take my sorrow
Just a drink and you can blast tomorrow
Just a drink to make me feel like a man again
Now I’m down…I will now receive my comfort, conjured by the magic power of wine
Just a drink, I’ll get that drink, and I’m feeling good
Just a drink, I’ll get that drink, and I’m feeling fine
Just a drink to take my sorrow
Just a drink and you can blast tomorrow, now…10 October, 2008 at 12:27 pm #380517http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqyc37aOqT0
“Sledgehammer”
you could have a steam train
if you’d just lay down your tracks
you could have an aeroplane flying
if you bring your blue sky backall you do is call me
I’ll be anything you needyou could have a big dipper
going up and down, all around the bends
you could have a bumper car, bumping
this amusement never endsI want to be your sledgehammer
why don’t you call my name
oh let me be your sledgehammer
this will be my testimony
show me round your fruitcage
‘cos I will be your honey bee
open up your fruitcage
where the fruit is as sweet as can beI want to be your sledgehammer
why don’t you call my name
you’d better call the sledgehammer
put your mind at rest
I’m going to be-the sledgehammer
this can be my testimony
I’m your sledgehammer
let there be no doubt about itsledge sledge sledgehammer
I’ve kicked the habit
shed my skin
this is the new stuff
I go dancing in, we go dancing in
oh won’t you show for me
and I will show for you
show for me, I will show for you
yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you
only you
you’ve been coming through
going to build that powerr
build, build up that power, hey
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
going to feel that power, build in you
come on, come on, help me do
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
it’s what we’re doing, doing
all day and night10 October, 2008 at 12:50 pm #380518A lovely vid of the boys here in..
Harlequin
Came the night a mist dissolved the trees
And in the broken light colours fly, fading by.
Pale and cold as figures fill the glade
Grey is the web they spin, on and on, and on and on.
Through the flame still summer lingers on
Though her pictures soon shatter. All, always the same.
But there appears in the shades of dawning,
Though your eyes are dim,
All of the pieces in the sky. There was once a harvest in this land.
Reap from the turquoise sky, harlequin, harlequin,
Dancing round, three children fill the glade,
Theirs was the laughter in the winding stream, and in between.
Close your door, the picture fades again
From the flames in the firelight. All, always the same,
But there appears in the shades of dawning,
Though your eyes are dim,
All of the pieces in the sky. All, all is not lost,
And light appears in the shades of dawning
When your eyes can see
Order the pieces, put them back, put them back.10 October, 2008 at 9:48 pm #380519Tell me my life is about to begin
Tell me that I am a hero,
Promise me all of your violent dreams
Light up your body with anger.
Now, in this ugly world
it is time to destroy all this evil.
Now, when I give the word
get ready to fight for your freedom
Now –Stand up and fight, for you know we are right
We must strike at the lies
That have spread like disease through our minds.
Soon we’ll have power, every soldier will rest
And we’ll spread out our kindness
To all who our love now deserve.
Some of you are going to die –
Martyrs of course to the freedom that I shall provide.I’ll give you the names of those you must kill,
All must die with their children.
Carry their heads to the palace of old,
Hang them high, let the blood flow.
Now, in this ugly world
break all the chains around us,
Now, the crusade has begun
give us a land fit for heroes,
Now –Stand up and fight, for you know we are right
We must strike at the lies
That have spread like disease through our minds.
Soon we’ll have power, every soldier will rest
And we’ll spread out our kindness
To all who our love now deserve.
Some of you are going to die –
Martyrs of course to the freedom that I shall provide. We are only wanting freedom
We are only wanting freedom
We are only wanting freedom
We are only wanting freedom (“Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom…”)
We are only wanting freedom (“Things are getting out of control here today”)
We are only wanting freedom (“OK men – fire over their heads!”)
We are only wanting freedom— WE HAVE WON —
Some of you are going to die,
Martyrs of course to the freedom that I shall provide.Watcher of the skies watcher of all
His is a world alone no world is his own,
He whom life can no longer surprise,
Raising his eyes beholds a planet unknown.Creatures shaped this planets soil,
Now their reign has come to an end,
Has life again destroyed life,
Do they play elsewhere, do they know
More than their childhood games?
Maybe the lizards shed its tail,
This is the end of mans long union with earth.Judge not this race by empty remains
Do you judge God by his creatures when they are dead?
For now, the lizards shed its tail
This is the end of mans long union with earth. From life alone to life as one,
Think not now your journeys done
For though your ship be sturdy, no
Mercy has the sea,
Will you survive on the ocean of being?
Come ancient children hear what I say
This is my parting council for you on your way.Sadly now your thoughts turn to the stars
Where we have gone you know you never can go.
Watcher of the skies watcher of all
This is your fate alone, this fate is your own.15 October, 2008 at 1:09 pm #380520Foxtrot and Nursery Chryme are great albums as is Lamb -downhill then dont you reckon?

For me, Peter Gabriel WAS Genesis, so without him, the band never again attained the giddy heights of the likes of Foxtrot..the seminal Genesis offering.
That said..I loved Trick Of The Tail..but over the years have found it difficult to warm to Collins as frontman..he can never hope to emulate the style and class of Gabriel.
Rutherford and Banks carry the band now.
15 October, 2008 at 1:25 pm #380522TRY AGAIN TO GET IT ON…..
Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot are great albums as is Lamb-most stuff after is a bit iffy to say the least-agree?15 October, 2008 at 1:28 pm #380523I agree – why Phil Collins decided that it would be a good idea for him to take over on vocals is beyond me. He’s not even a very good drummer – but at least when he’s playing you don’t have to listen to him sing!
Have you ever been to see Gabriel solo – he does an absolutely fantastic show, is a great showman, actually designs his own shows and does things like this:

and THIS:

I saw this tour and it was quite possibly the best thing I ever saw….
….but then I didn’t ever get to see him perform with Genesis!15 October, 2008 at 1:40 pm #380524@drummerchris wrote:

The ethereal and the surreal that MADE early Genesis, was replaced by more mainstream popiness when Collins took the reins.
Still churning out some good tunes..but at the expense of the original magic. -
