sorry ive only just come across this
thread :? so i will apologise if i rake up an old row.

being a parent of a child with adhd i can categorically state that it takes
at least 2 to 3 years of visits to a psychiatrist, plus talks with the school
and parents before they are even put on medication, and the medication
isnt thrown at them it is used with extreme caution, usually by sending
them to a hospital for kids with learning problems everyday for at least
    three months.

then there are the outpatient visits once every six months to do follow up
checks for height weight and blood pressure, and to discuss whether the
meds need increasing or decreasing. i would also like to add that if a
child starts losing weight because of the drugs they are taken off them
    immedialty.

adhd is an illness that is caused by a chemical imbalance in the left frontal
lobe which causes the brain to work at half its normal speed, and causes
behavioural problems that can be mild or extreme. it also hinders learning
because a child simply cannot focus on one thing long enough to take it
in. for example learning to read can be extremly frustrating and
upsetting for a child with adhd that hasnt been treated, because they cant
focus on the words on the page no matter how many times you go over it
    with them.

as for the bad behaviour side of it when my kid is on meds she is far from
being a “zombie” she is like any other kid, she can still play and have a
joke and a laugh and hold a decent conversation. however when she is off
them (usually first thing in the morning and last thing at night), she has
severe mood swings, which are sometimes violent. she cannot focus on
getting herself ready for school, will not brush her teeth or her hair unless
told by me umpteen times, will not change her clothes or look after her
personal hygeine and even then only after i have nagged her. (she is
almost 13 by the way) gets frustrated easily and extremly angry if she
cant find something straight away, and will kick off into a major tantrum
until she has found it. and the only thing you can do is let them get it out
of their system because sometimes trying to help them just makes them
    even more frustrated.

im sorry some kids are badly behaved due to bad parenting, however i
think there are also kids that genuinely do have behaviour difficulties and
you cant slate all parents with unruly kids the same, unless you know the
    reasons behind the bad behaviour.

Titania – so sorry for you and your daughter – you
definately deserve respect for being a conscientious parent and supporting your child.

Could I ask a queston [or three] ? if a child has adhd, does that carry on
into adulthood ? is it a lifetime condition ? is it a 20th century condition
or has this always been around but undiagnosed ?

I don’t really know anything about the condition, and think society just
label kids with adhd as being “unruly” kids rather than trying to
    understand the condition.

    I happen to know that…
studied that kind of conditions a bit…

Going on drugs because of ADHD is a big question. Some times it would be better that way …it think.

There’s this TV-show on Finnish channel4 called Extremedudesons.
They are like Jackass, bunch of boys in their 20’s who do some crazy
stuff. One of the boys actually has ADHD and it really shows. He has
injured himself several times and sometimes pretty bad. He has also
caused his friend’s thumb abutation. Some times I wonder if that guy will
be alive to see next year… he could atleast try some pills.

OMg why would people want to do things like that it baffles me

Well, it sells pretty well, they have their own clothing label
(or what ever that is) their show is very popular and they get to travel
abroad and meet some big starts.

And their parents don’t really mind if they kill each other

If anyone is interested watch the final episode of Viva La Bam, I’ve heard that the Extremedudesons are there…
