Well you’re are in the same position has most people this winter.
Gas prices have been going up for years and I have been telling people to stop using it for home heating, but no fooker listened.
There is help for people on low incomes, benefits or over the age of 70.
Have pop a few web sites on the bottom of this.
If you tell me how many radiators you have, size of house, will pop some money saving tips on for you.

thanks doa and batty will look later work soon so wont have time just now will let u know when i get back home , doa i have 7 radiatiors all run on the one thermostat, cant turn any down but can use the thermostat on the wall, dunt ferget its council doa so prob the cheapest of the cheap system, its a pressurised system? if that helps but thing is i heat the water by gas on usually an hour in the morning and an hour at night 5 days a week then on prob more or less constant over the weekend no heating been on until last wednesday and then only for an hour to take the chill off…… cooking by gas prob around at most 40 mins a day then maybe ony the oven and maybe one gas ring.

and use what ? electric ? oil ?
2 October, 2008 at 12:06 pm #377099In my old house I had a solid fuel rayburn. Every morning I,d rake the fire pit out and shove some more coal in it. It provided the hotest water supply I,ve ever had. When I used my washing machine the steam would come out of the dispenser drawer, it was that hot. It heated all the radiators in the house so we were as warm as toast. Best cooker/heater I,ve ever had that. I don,t half miss it too.
2 October, 2008 at 12:09 pm #377100Starting bid £30.99
2 October, 2008 at 12:14 pm #377101Thats exactly what mine was like, except mine was a dark brown and it had a warming oven as well, that one only has one oven.Wonderful inventions they are. You can get electric ones but I don,t think they would be so good; it,s not “real heat”, not like coal. *sigh*
2 October, 2008 at 12:17 pm #377102Right Cath, due to it being a council house…….
You have just got lucky.
All councils/ housing association in England are taking part in the “warm front” program.
They will be replacing your boiler, radiators and insulation soon.
You need to contact your housing provider for more details and work start dates in your area.
But I can’t see how you are using £500 per year of gas in the first place. God knows how you are using £750 !!!!!!
You need to get that meter checked out.
It sounds like you don’t have an electric shower, they do save a lot of money.
All radiators can be turn down and in rooms you’re not using turn them right down but not off.
I know this sounds a bit odd, but turning off your heating costs more than having it on all day.
Its all about “recovery rates”, you know when you fill a pan with cold water and place it on the cooker? It takes a while to boil, but if you fill it with warm water from the tap, it boils faster.
Your home is the same, if you leave your heating on low all day, then turn it up when you get home, you will save money.
Try and find a second hand dish washer, they are cheaper to run than using the boiler and hot water from the tap.
Hope it helps.
2 October, 2008 at 12:19 pm #377103thanks doa dunt have a dishwasher tho no need for one…….. but other tips good and will contact council and get me meter checked too
actually im not sure how they have worked out my monthly payments this bill my last quarter is for £66.42 which is not extortionate. because they take it over the year i suppose so will dig out my old gas bills and total it all up
