I got a old comp thats still works perfectly but cant update any software for instance norton or winplayer cus im running windows 98.
So im thinking of starting from scratch and fitting a new hardrive and maybe vista.
How easy is this going to be. Am i going to have probs with sound cards and graphics cards and stuff ?
If i dont update and fit new hardrive i’ll prob just bin it.10 September, 2008 at 9:07 pm #371109I saved all my drivers to a dvd disk and had a few that needed re-uploading.
I only learnt that after failing to save it on my son’s pc before doing a clean format for him, and his sound still doesnt work, and I cant find the drivers on line.
DVD’s have a higher capacity than cd’s and I managed to save all my pics and music and vids easily (DOA told me to do it).
10 September, 2008 at 9:39 pm #371110How old is it you want a lot of memory (1Gb min) just to run Vista you need 500 Mb for XP so i’d go for XP Get an enclosure ( http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-35ENC thats one i use) for your old hard drive stick it in that plug into USB port (assuming its got one) and all the files are available. Suppose it depends what you want to do once you’ve upgraded your hard drive
11 September, 2008 at 9:59 am #371111Here the main problem.
There are minimum system requirements for operating systems like windows xp and vista.
Windows xp
500Mhz chip
512mb Ram
4 gig hard drive
Windows Vista
Dual Core chip
2 Gb ram
20 gig hard drive.
If the computer you are using now, dont meet the system requirements, you are wasting your time.
If this was me……….
I would shop around for a new one, they start about £300
11 September, 2008 at 11:00 am #371112You could always convert it to Linux; as it takes up much less memory. Linux is gaining popularity, and even comes preinstalled on lots of computers now.
Just a thought.

11 September, 2008 at 12:53 pm #371114No need ”To purchase” just go for a ride on the london underground the ”authorities” leave them laying around for you to pick up with the added bonus of;
Thousands of convicts personal data files
or
Details of everyone registered by the UK driving agency DVLA
or
Details of every prison warden in the country etc etc…..
Free laptop packed with lots of personal details to sell to a complete stranger for a small fortune.
Hospitals have cheap laptops as well, I think my local health trust lost quite a few last year.
Why buy they are giving them away for free.
