Mine has to be tarmac. My gran lived close to the docks in Liverpool , you could always smell the stuff wafting around the streets. Another smell is  hot donuts reminds me as a kid hanging around the pier head or landing stage as the older people would call it. My grandad worked on the royal Iris ( a  mersey ferry  cruiser ) every saturday we would meet him when he finished work. We would go the the donut stall for a bag of donuts to take home needless to say they never made it! we ate them on the way.

Love smells at fresh bakery shops. Early early mornings. Want it all..

    Hot pretzels and roasted chestnuts.

That’s a nice post, Sophia, and a good thread.

Smells are very important to all of us as children.

I cna’t think of anything as good as the smells of your childhood, but I loved the smell of candy floss at the fair.

The sounds and laughter of the fairground were magic to me when i was a kid. There always seemed to be the promise of something wonderful about to happen, though usually all that did happen was being sick after eating the candy floss and whirling around on the wurlitzer.

Scep I’ll never forget the smell of hot dogs when the fair came to town.  I knew they were wrong I knew they were dirty but god how I wanted one ! Those greasy onions made it!

Now that smell always put me off, Rose.

But I think that for kids of the past 40 years, it’s been the colours and smell of a Macdonald’s fast-food shithouse which has been the main trap. They really do get very excited over going to Ronnald’s Place.

I’ve been thinking about this thread, and I suddenly realise that I have a problem.

I’ve forgotten the smell of Christmas.

Maybe Christmas doesn’t have a smell?

I do remember as a kid the incredible excitement as Christmas approached, the feel that there was something different with a lot more people smiling (in my day, in the early medieval period, when the main smell was horse crap on the roads caused by the transport of that day), and for kids that often comes across as a smell.

But does Christmas have a smell??

    duh.

    What a decent question.

For me – its the smell of alcohol or cigs. Or minge?

Obviously fresh cut grass,   cakes, coffee etc factored but hey the 1st smell of “a PUB” b4 smoking ban etc

oh and minge – thats a smell u cant mistake for a bad day on whitley bay

    oh and SPICY FOOD !

    BTW HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

linda, Christmas has a nice feel to it, but I was wondering about the smell.

Sweet mince pies are very characteristic of a British Christmas, but do they have a smell?

Pine would be a nice smell, but that must be an American Christmas, I don’t think it’s a Brit Christmas *waits to be corrected, it was never part of my Christmas, anyway.
