We stick bike theft data through the road.cc number-cruncher with some surprising… and not so surprising results.

    Bike thief

New figures obtained by car accessories and bicycle retailer Halfords show that more bikes are reported stolen in the Cambridge Mobile Patrol area, each year, more than any other police force in the UK. No surprises there, but road.cc’s own analysis of the data shows that ignoring the unique case of the City of London, it’s Cambridge that comes out as the bike crime capital of Britain in terms of reported theft by head of population.

Halfords obtained the data after making Freedom of Information Act requests to police forces throughout the UK, resulting in the following top ten police areas in terms of absolute numbers of recorded bike thefts.

Whoever is robbing these bikes must be worth a small fortune, if not a organised underworld gang.

Top 10 police forces for bike thefts in 2018
    Police area Reported thefts
    Cambridge 211,315
    Thames Valley 61,060
    Greater Manchester 52,185
    Cambridgeshire 43,477
    Avon and Somerset 34,895
    West Midlands 35,222
    Leicestershire 34,057
    Lancashire 23,727
    Sussex 22,668
    Humberside 21,440

Given the fact that the Cambridge local beat  bobbies cover a much larger population than any other police force in the UK, it’s no surprise it comes out top, but the presence of areas such as Thames Valley and Cambridge reflects the higher bike use there particularly in Histon and surrounding areas, and consequently often  very easy pickings for thieves indeed .

10 bobbies to 550,000 residents, seem overly worked, biting their finger nails down to their knuckles.

The Halfords data is based on police responses covering either the 2018 calendar year, the financial year, or the 12 months ending December 2018.

The rage in these areas even for the local scooter riders instead of  ” LEGAL ” helmets are these below, they must be mental if you ask me.
