I have been looking after an injured hedgehog i found in my garden 3 mths ago. He was so tiny and below the 500grams he needed to be before he could hibernate i decided to fatten him up with tasty cat food and meal worms. Today he weighed in at 700 grams which means he can be released. I will wait until after bonefire night for his own safety. Some cute pics of Hoggy.

Awesome, wow….
He may get attached to you from feedings and bonding. Do not release too far away from your home in case he still needs you.. I had this with a fawn..release back to the wild…. month old, abandoned by wild storm, mother lost baby. Worked with ny animal warden here. Fed her every 2 hours around clock with kitten formula. What a job…
Releasing her back, she would still look in my side door, looked for her treats. Took 6 months coaxing to get her more near my property out to wetlands.. she finally found a mate.. less visits, back to call of wild….

28 October, 2017 at 5:03 pm #1077029Hi Linda, ive asked experts opinion we have a charity called st tiggywinkles who advised me to release him where i found him. I have avoided handling him as much as possible he still retains his suspicion of humans, i only handle him when he gets weighed. As hes a nocturnal animal and sleeps all day he doesnt really see me.I put his food in his box when hes alseep. I know hes still wild he will curl up into a ball when handled. I was going to over winter him but being over 700 grams he has sufficient fat reserves to survive hibernation. I can only hope he survives to come back soon to visit my garden

29 October, 2017 at 2:46 am #1077091That’s a nice deed that you’ve done Sophia.
But please don’t release poor old Hoggy anywhere near room 2 near the ever present chatter known as Magma (Margaret as he wishes to be known). He has a habit of touching wild animals and rodents up when he thinks no ones looking. I wouldn’t want the hedgehog to end up in regular counselling sessions after suffering trauma already x
