    Melvin Baker – AHN
Ottawa, Canada (AHN) – A 12-year-old girl took her dad to court after he grounded her for disobeying his orders to stay off the Internet. And she won.

The father banned his daughter from going on a school trip after she used a friend’s computer to chat on websites he had blocked at home, and then posted pictures of herself online that her dad considered inappropriate.

Neither the father or his daughter have been identified to protect the girl.

With the help of a public defender, the girl sued her father. Quebec Superior Court Justice Suzanne Tessier noted that the girl had repeated defied her father, but ruled that the father’s punishement was too severe.

Attorney Kim Beaudoin, who represented the father, told Agence France-Presse that “I think most children respect their parents and would never go so far as to take them to court, but it’s clear that some would and we have to ask ourselves how far this will go.”

Beaudoin said she was appealing the judge’s order.

That is the stupidest thing that I have ever heard. I’m surprised the judge actually accepted such absurd grounds for legal action

This cant be true, surely? The internet is crawling with paedophiles who join these teen chat sites and pretend to be their age. It is the role of a parent to protect their child from this sort of thing and he was right to block these sites at home and to be worried about her putting pictures of herself on the net. How the hell is he supposed to protect her when a court has over ruled him? A 12 year old is too naive to know the dangers on the net. Its madness.

If more children took their parents to court, perhaps parents would take their responsibilities more seriously.

In this case it seems the child had an argument with her stepmother, and it was after that the father refused her a once in a lifetime school trip (the internet connection was only a small part of it).

To quote… the child came from a high conflict situation between two parents, and consequently she had her own attorney to protect her interests.

Cr ap parenting in other words.

It’s just an absurd story. Canada is quite good at doing PC excess!

I would imagine the internet thing is only the tip of the iceberg with this family. Sounds like there is a whole can of worms there.
