MPs are preparing to vote on maintaining the 24-week upper limit for “social” abortions in the biggest Parliamentary battle on the issue for two decades.
Experts say late abortions are still provided by the NHS for foetal abnormalities but most of those approved on “social” grounds are referred outside.
The 24-week limit, was was cut from 28 weeks in 1990, but there are now expected to be votes on 13, 16, 18, 20 and 22 weeks. Abortion when a foetus is disabled would still be allowed right up to birth.
Interestingly, these are some of the current limits worldwide
US 26 weeks
England and Wales 24 weeks
France, spain & germany 12 weeks
italy 13 weeks
Netherlands no time limit
Ireland only to save a womans lifeSo, what do you suggest?
17 May, 2008 at 11:50 am #336117I think that abortion is a good idea, it saves neglect towards children but I am not good with the idea of late abortions, they are saving premature babies at 26 weeks.
I am always torn on abortion, it breaks my heart, there are other options such as adoption.
A past friend of mine had an abortion of twins at 22 weeks I find it difficult to call her a friend now, the circumstances were terrible for her but she could of done things differently.
In a reality it’s difficult, some women don’t know they are pregnant until later on in the pregnancy…. Urgh, I am just typing everything that pops to mind.
Rape victims should have a choice
Legal abortions are better than having back street abortions so I disagree with Irelands take on the matter.
I am going to stop babbling, I think if it’s going to happen then it should be as early as possible. :?

That’s nothing in Jersey and Austria they keep them in the celler.
I think it’s wrong that a lot of women use it these days as a contraceptive. I think it should be 12 or possibly 8 weeks.
17 May, 2008 at 2:01 pm #336120I was almost an abortion. My gran dragged my mum to Liverpool (they were still illegal in Scotland) to have the deed done, but my mum ran out the hospital.
Im glad I have never been in a position to have to decide. I think the time limits do seriously need looking at having seen pictures of the “fetus’s” as they call them.
A very emotive subject this one. :?

what about rape victims?
17 May, 2008 at 2:35 pm #336122thankfully Ive never been in the position of having to make a choice. I definitely disagree with the whole concept of abortion being a form of contraceptive. I do believe rape victims should have a choice.
Other than that, find it hard to comment. I guess every case is individual. Hopefully not a choice I would ever choose though.

With the “morning after pill”, are abortions still nesscary?
We do have many forms and ways of perventing the need for abortions, most are easy to find and free.
But we all know there are times when abortion is the only way.
24 weeks is about 6 months, out of the 9 months, it is too long and should be stoped.
If an abortion is carried out at 24 weeks, is due to meditcal reasons, not social.
If you don’t feel the time is right to have a baby, (and it never is) there should be a limit of 12 weeks for most abortions.
But has we all know, most abortions in the UK are carried out for women who don’t live here or members of some social groups beleave that girls are waste of time.
I think its about time we ask a few more questions about why so many abortions are being done in the UK and what kind of people are asking for them.
17 May, 2008 at 2:47 pm #336124I also think hospitals dont make it any easier on those that have decided. we all know its better all round for early as poss abortions, but sometimes you are not given an appointment for 2 weeks later,to see a consultant, then another week at least to enter hospital.I think it should be more of an almost walk in centre.and definetly more councelling beforehand. I know of no one who has hop.skipped and jumped into having one.just a feeling of futility, guilt and what ifs.
its one of them occasions where you have to be there.
But yes, i am against Late abortions too.

You are the best example to be for abortions regardless of how advanced the pregnancy is.
You are also the perfect example for compulsary sterilisation at birth. -
