6 May, 2008 at 8:20 am #333523Yes, I think when I was at school they were like a mock exam, designed to mimic the proper GCSE’s, so as much as they dont count towards final exams for leaving school they give the kids a taster and give the teachers the results to ensure all the kids are choosing the GCSE’s that are right for them in the long run.
I never used to get worked up about exams, and my son’s the same… he went out the door and just kinda grunted “Maths today….”, but some kids get themselves really worried, such a shame when they dont really matter in the long term…
6 May, 2008 at 8:23 am #333524well ive always said to my lass ive no high expectations from her in life, as long as she’s happy, and knows she’s loved, will do me, i didnt do my Olevels, well i did go into English drew on the table fir 1/2hr then walked out, I thk Ive done extremely well in life considering ive not got school qualifications..
6 May, 2008 at 9:05 am #333525That’s true its not the end of the world if you dont succeed academically, but your never told that at school.
A few people I went to school with who failed or never took exams are a lot more successful than I will ever be.
6 May, 2008 at 3:17 pm #333526Both my sons are doing their SATS my youngest’s are spaced out over 2 weeks, my eldest also did maths today, he isn’t bothered in the slightest, he said ” my dad hasn’t got any and he owns 3 houses , 4 cars and he has a plasma TV in every room  Kids eh?
6 May, 2008 at 3:37 pm #333527I personally see no need for exams, why not just judge it on course work? English & French were my top two subjects from day one at school, I was in the ‘Credit’ classes in both from third year and was getting high marks to show why I was there.
On the day of my exams, I didn’t do so well and those are now my credentials. Not the previous excellent test scores or course work, just the mark from a one off exam which just happened to be a rare off day. Same with Modern Studies, I aced the course work, didn’t do so well in the exams so it effectively counted for sweet FA.
Doesn’t matter much, I remember one of my careers teachers telling me (my first taste of work experience was in the local careers office a year after leaving school) that leaving school was the best decision I ever made and being in a working environment brought out the best in me. And I can’t disagree with that.
