I have just been reading an article about c. difficule killing 4 times as many people as MRSA now. This bug is found in the large intestine and takes over when the normal gut bacteria are wiped out by use of broad spectrum antibiotics.

Antibiotics were considered wonder drugs, and in many ways still are, but it seems that over prescription is creating bacteria which cannot be killed.
What do we all do when antibiotics no longer work? What remedies or treatments do you all use in place of antibiotics now. And do any of you know anyone who has caught MRSA or c. difficile?
27 April, 2008 at 5:58 pm #332169In this country the medical profession has got all “girly” about antibiotics and generally refuses to prescribe them unless pushed really hard.
If they do prescribe, it is usually 250mg capsules 3 or 4 times a day = 750mg to 1g of antibiotic per day. This is a minimal dose to achieve anything at all and is generally worse than bloody useless and the appallingly hopeless GPs might as well not bother.
I like the way they do it in southern Italy. If you need broad spectrum antibiotics you simply pop down to your local chemist and buy yourself a box of Amoxicillin for around 5 Euros. they come in 1 gram tablets and you take two a day = 2 grams of antibiotic / day.
Do this for 6 days and you can pretty much knock any bacterial infections on the head.
27 April, 2008 at 6:19 pm #332170Good old Amoxicillin, as a regular sufferer of ear infections, it’s been a great help in the past.
27 April, 2008 at 6:26 pm #332171When you take any antibiotic, it destroys all the friendly bacteria too, generally. I agree to have heavier doses for less time is a good idea, but there are a lot of bugs that are now resistant to antibiotics like amoxicillin.
It wouldn’t matter how much amoxicillin you were given, if the bacteria was resistant, it wouldn’t have any effect on it. This is what is happening to these so called super bugs. So what will we do when the drugs don’t work?
27 April, 2008 at 6:36 pm #332172They have known this for some years Minim, hence the medical profession trying to wean us off antibiotics now.more harm than good was caused as folks built up a resistance. as you say, they were kiling good bacteria too,so secondary infections were becoming more and more frequent. Scary stuff really..
I get fooking thrush every time im on amoxycillin !

27 April, 2008 at 7:29 pm #332175I have Stevens Johnsons syndrome, it limits me to the amount of different antibiotics I can take, if I have an ear infection then I have to suffer, it’s a case of, I can’t take anything to regular because if I do it knocks my immune system, making things 10 times worst and I am more likely to get an infection again soon after the last one.
I say if you have a problem try to fight the infection yourself, steer clear of antibiotics.
27 April, 2008 at 7:45 pm #332176i agree sian overuse of any tablets are not a good idea, colloidal silver and olive leaf extract are good natural antibiotics to use instead of manufactured ones,my gran used to take colloidal silver daily she always said prevention is better than cure and to be fair until she died she was rarely if ever ill that i can remember, she used it if us grandkids every grazed our knees or anything too i dunno if it does actually work but never harmed us, garlic is another good one but ewwwwww
28 April, 2008 at 5:37 pm #332177Anyone use homeopathic stuff? Do you think it works?
What about other alternative treatments, like reflexology or acupuncture. Anyone have any experiences with anything like that? Also chinese medicine shops seem to be springing up in all the main shopping centres, has anyone tried any of their remedies?
